London-based AI production studio Particle6 caused quite a stir with the introduction of Tilly Norwood, a twenty-something created entirely with artificial intelligence. It especially angered Hollywood.
In a conversation with Sky News Van der Velden, actress and founder of Particle6, emphasizes that Norwood “is not intended to take away jobs in the traditional film world.”
Separate genre
According to Van der Velden, AI entertainment is developing as “a completely separate genre”. “And that is where Tilly is meant to stay. She is meant to stay in the AI genre and be a star there.” She emphasizes: “I don’t want her to take the jobs of real actors. I wanted her to have her own creative path.”
Hollywood furious with Dutch AI creation: ‘God, we are in trouble!’
The introduction of Norwood led to strong reactions. Movie star Emily Blunt called her terrifying, as did Whoopi Goldberg. Tom Hollander actually thought that it will only increase the value of authentic actors.
Van der Velden states that Hollywood “will have to learn how to work with AI in the future.” “We can’t stop it,” she adds. “If we bury our heads in the sand, our jobs will disappear. But if we learn how to use these tools, if we use them in advance, especially in Britain, we can create a creative powerhouse are.”
Film director Martin Koolhoven told De Telegraaf that he is also not very concerned about the advance of AI within the film industry. “It is mediocrity that is already embracing it, but I don’t believe in the slightest that people will be enthusiastic about this and want to pay for it.”
