Dutch chess player Anish Giri is a surprise winner at Tata Steel Chess

Anish Giri was the best chess player at the Tata Steel tournament. The 28-year-old took the overall victory at the chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee for the first time in his career. Giri is the second Dutch winner since 1985 after Jorden van Foreest in 2021.

Giri has been close in recent years, as he finished second five times. In the final round of the chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee, Giri defeated Richard Rapport. Leader Nodirbek Abdoesattorov lost to Van Foreest, so that Giri took the overall victory.

Giri could have taken over the lead yesterday, but that ended in a draw against compatriot Van Foreest. The latter finished tenth in the final classification.

The 16-year-old Amsterdam Eline Roebers participated in the challengers. She shared last place with Jergus Pechac.
