Dutch champion Yvanka (17) is making good progress: “The first girl ever”

She is the first female MBO student to become Dutch champion in construction carpentry. Yvanka de Reus from Grootschermer is making good progress. With her roof construction, she won the gold in the final of Skills Heroes this weekend. These are national professional competitions for MBO students who excel in their education.

Yvanka had to compete against seven other students in the final. Never before has there been a lady in the final battle of the construction carpentry section. “I think it’s really cool that I came first, the first girl ever. I showed the boys that girls can also carve and excel at it.”

Yvanka had to perform a difficult assignment during the final in the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht. “We had to make a roof construction where everything had to be right down to the millimeter. I completed the assignment within the time frame and I was satisfied with it.”

World Cup in China

As the winner, Yvanka can now even go to the World Cup in China. Then talents from sixty different countries compete for the coveted world title. “That seems very cool to me. I am curious what will come my way and what opportunities I will get.”

Last December, Yvanka qualified for the national final. Then she already proved that she is made of the right stuff. She came out on top in qualifying at the time. Media partner Dike and Worth Central spoke to her at the time.

Yvanka de Reus (17) is co-educated by ESPEQ secondary vocational education in Heerhugowaard. In addition to a day at school, she follows a course for the rest of the week at the construction company Jonker and Meijerhof in Grootschermer. “I got involved myself because of my renovation at home. Every afternoon I went after school to see how things were going. And I always built huts in the past.”

Yvanka will be honored tomorrow at Horizon College in Alkmaar. Then Sam Strijbis from Dirkshorn will also be put in the spotlight. He was voted best sanitary and heating technician. There was silver for nurse Laura van Engen from Westwoud and Robin Berkhout from Andijk won bronze from the furniture makers.
