DualSense Edge Controller for PlayStation: Is the price right?

Sony has revealed more details about its new controller, the DualSense Edge, including the price – and it has it all!

Manufacturer Sony announced a few months ago that a new high-end controller is to come for the PlayStation 5. Now there is more detailed information on the start and also on the price. And at just under 240 euros, it is quite juicy! Is that still justified for a single controller? The TECHBOOK editorial team has a clear opinion on this.

The Sony DualSense Edge for the PlayStation can do that

Sony has announced its high-priced controller for January 26, 2023. Pre-orders are possible from October 25th. With the new model it is possible to change the stick modules completely and not just the caps. This allows the controller to be better adapted to different player types and hands. It also makes it easier to swap out the sticks if they wear out or start drifting.

A similar concept is also used for the buttons on the back of the DualSense Edge. These can also be exchanged. The keys can also be assigned additional functions. Another new feature is that players can create multiple configuration profiles for the controller.

For the mentioned 240 euros you get the controller itself, as well as the following accessories:

  • USB cable with lock option
  • 2 standard caps
  • 4 round caps (2x high, 2x low)
  • 2 semicircular back keys
  • 2 lever return buttons
  • connector housing
  • matching protective case

Is the price justified?

TECHBOOK means

“I bought my PlayStation 4 with two controllers a few years ago for just under 200 euros. It doesn’t make sense to me why a single controller should cost more than a complete system. Even Microsoft’s excellent Xbox Elite Series 2 costs a whopping $200, but the DualSense Edge makes it seem like a steal. The only consolation is that hardly anyone gets the PlayStation 5 at MSRP anyway. Nothing goes for less than 800 euros, so what does 240 euros mean for a controller (/end sarcasm)?” – Adrian Mühlroth, editor

TECHBOOK means

“240 euros for a controller – no matter how cool I think it is – is just too much for me personally. Among other things, Sony has just raised the prices for its PlayStation 5 in Europe, which despite all the promises is still difficult to obtain. I find it really difficult that the DualSense Edge should cost so much. Of course, it is practical how flexible you get with the concept of interchangeable sticks – however, a new module also costs around 25 euros. It then depends on the half-life to what extent these costs will pay off in the long term. But with a current RRP of 550 euros (if you are lucky enough to get a console for this price) plus these 240 euros, you are now landing in spheres that we were not even considering in our nightmares until recently.
