Andreas Wellinger’s form crisis continues. Now the German Olympic ski jumping champion is drawing conclusions.

The German ski jumper Andreas Wellinger has decided to skip the World Cup in Engelberg and thus the dress rehearsal for the Four Hills Tournament in order to work intensively on his technique. After a disappointing 40th place in Klingenthal, the Olympic champion would like to improve his form through targeted training and bring consistency to his jumps.

In an interview with ARD, Wellinger said: “I definitely won’t be going next week.” He wanted to take a step forward on the hill that he liked. “It’s a bit of a halt at the moment. So definitely get out there and do a few jumps,” said Wellinger. His start in Klingenthal was already in jeopardy. “But I actually trained quite well and said I would accept the challenge and jump in front of the home crowd,” he said, explaining his start in Vogtland.

With the exception of a seventh place finish in Ruka, Finland, Wellinger has so far lagged behind the competition this season. “My jumping performance is just bad at the moment. I can’t manage to be consistent. It’s such choppy movements. If you imagine it, you don’t drive the car around the corner in one swing, but with four or five corners. That’s exactly how jumping feels at the moment,” he described his problems.

Former world champion Karl Geiger, who recently had no chance in Wisla, Poland, and was replaced by Luca Roth, is currently no longer part of the World Cup team. On Sunday (4 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online) there is another single on the program in Klingenthal. Then all that’s left is the weekend in Engelberg, Switzerland, to get in shape for the tour.
