Drugovich becomes F2 champion as a spectator

Racing driver Felipe Drugovich (MP Motorsport) won the Formula 2 title – as a spectator at the pit wall.

The Brazilian had to retire in the sprint race in Monza after a collision after the start that broke his wheel suspension and did not score points, but the 22-year-old can no longer be dislodged from first place in the overall standings.

Drugovich was then extensively celebrated with the Brazilian flag for the success. After a strong season, he chose to succeed Oscar Piastri, the Australian will be driving for McLaren in Formula 1 next year. Mick Schumacher won the racing series in 2020.

His “pursuer” Théo Pourchaire (ART) should have been at least fifth after Drugovich retired or sixth including the fastest race lap, but in the end the Frenchman only finished 17th.

Jüri Vips (Hitech) clinched his first win of the season, pole setter Frederik Vesti (ART) finished second ahead of Jehan Daruvala (Prema). David Beckmann, who again replaced Jake Hughes at Van Amersfoort, scored another point in eighth.

The main race is still on the agenda in Monza on Sunday. The season finale will take place in Abu Dhabi in two months (November 19/20).
