Defense ‘does not have the impression’ that the drones that flew above the Volkel military air base this weekend were carrying weapons. This was said by outgoing Minister of Defense Ruben Brekelmans in the TV program Buitenhof.
Earlier Sunday, State Secretary Tuinman announced that drones were seen at Volkel air base on both Friday and Saturday. It was also a hit at Eindhoven Airport on Saturday evening. Five or six flew there and that caused air traffic to come to a standstill for a few hours.
It is not clear what the minister bases his impression that the drones were not armed on. The State Secretary said at WNL on Sunday that the drones are small and can be purchased in stores.
Defense tried to shoot the drones out of the air, but that was not successful. No parts have been found.
Fighter planes
Fighter planes are stationed at Volkel, but according to Brekelmans we don’t have to worry about that. “They are well protected there,” said the VVD minister.
The minister’s reassurance will be well received by residents of Volkel. They told Omroep Brabant on Saturday that they were concerned about their safety.
