In a large part of the province there is a dense fog on Wednesday morning. Not having your lamps on the right way can yield dangerous situations. We list for you what the rules are.
First of all, it is important to know that the automatic lighting does not apply to most cars when it is foggy. The sensor does not perceive the fog. And if the lamps do go on, often only the front light comes on, making the car on the back poorly visible.
Fog lights
According to Rijkswaterstaat, we distinguish two types of fog lights. Thanks to the lighting at the front you have more vision yourself. Because of the fog lamp at the back of the car you are more visible to other road users.
There are different rules for those two fog lights when you have to turn them on. With a view less than two hundred meters you turn on the information. Incidentally, this does not only apply to fog, but also to rain and snowfall.
With a view less than fifty meters you turn on the fog lights at the back of the car. That just is not allowed with heavy rainfall.
But how do you know you have poor visibility? On the highway there are hectometre posts every hundred meters. If you don’t see the following two signs, it means that the vision is worse than two hundred meters.
Symbol
For those who can never find the button: the symbol for fog light can be recognized by the winding line through the light rays. This twist line is on the right side of the symbol at the fog light.
In the symbol for the fog lights, the line is on the left side of the symbol. Are the winding lines on your car on the same side? Then pay attention to the difference between a sloping winding line and a straight turning line.
Rijkswaterstaat advises road users to know where the button is, so that you can turn the lights on and off on time.
If you do not turn off the lights on time, you will blind other road users. In addition, you can get a fine of between 120 and 180 euros for unnecessary driving with fog light.
