Today, the whole of Drenthe commemorates the victims of the Second World War. Commemorations will take place in dozens of places, with a two-minute silence at 8 p.m.

The commemoration day starts with a lecture in the building of the Apostolic Society. There, at 2 p.m., Richard Winter from the Hiding Museum in Nieuwlande will talk about the importance of commemorating and keeping history alive.

The exhibition will be held in the same building on May 4 and 5 Meppel 1940-1945 on display, with seven panels about the 236 stumbling blocks of Jewish fellow citizens who did not return from the concentration camps.

There are also commemorations elsewhere in the province. A ceremony will take place in Assen in the Anne Frank Park from 4 p.m. It is the second time that an official commemoration is held there.

In Zuidlaren, a commemoration starts at 7:30 PM at the synagogue, followed by a silent procession to the war memorial in the village. Specific attention is paid to Jewish war victims, although attention is also paid to other victims of the war.

In several places in Drenthe, May 4 committees organize silent marches and wreath laying at local monuments. Everywhere there is a two-minute silence at 8 p.m.

RTV Drenthe will be present tonight at the commemoration program of the Camp Westerbork Remembrance Center. From 7 p.m. the silent procession to the National Monument can be followed live on TV Drenthe and on this website.
