Dramatic Ajax forfeits expensive points against FC Emmen and goes to the World Cup with a bad feeling

The early World Cup stop comes at a good time for Ajax. The team from Amsterdam have not won for the third time in a row. After a defeat against PSV and a draw against Vitesse, it was now 3-3 against FC Emmen.

The start of the team from Amsterdam was dramatic, because after six minutes FC Emmen was ahead. Jeroen Veldmate shot a fine free kick behind Remko Pasveer. The answer was not long in coming, because Kenneth Taylor put Ajax at 1-1. The visitors seemed to be getting better and better in the game, but it was Emmen that got a huge chance.

Miguel Araujo was completely free on a free kick and shot the post from close range. After that Ajax more and more took matters into their own hands. It was Taylor, who put his team at 2-1 moments later. He headed straight from a cross by Dusan Tadic. Steven Bergwijn made a devastating blow a few minutes later from the edge of sixteen: 1-3. Just before half time Ajax got away well, after Calvin Bassey made a mistake. Richairo Zivkovic went to Pasveer alone. The goalkeeper turned the ball.

Comeback complete

So Ajax seemed to have a comfortable lead, but that was an illusion. After sixty minutes of all, former Ajax player Richairo Zivkovic made it exciting again: 2-3. Bergwijn was able to give the team from Amsterdam some air again in the counterstroke, but he found Mickey van der Hart on his way.

Kudus hit the bar moments later. After that it was Emmen that struck the clock. Mark Diemers shot the ball past, but Mohamed Bouchouari made it 3-3 just before time. Ajax then tried to turn the tide. That just didn’t work.

Ajax is third behind PSV and Feyenoord. They have played one game less, so they can take full advantage. The next game after the winter break is January 8 against NEC in Nijmegen.
