Arminia Bielefeld has thanks to “joker” Janni-Luca Serra gave some air against FC St. Pauli in the relegation battle of the 2nd Bundesliga.
After three league bankruptcies in a row and the 0:6 swatter in the DFB Cup at VfB Stuttgart, Arminia Bielefeld has booked a sense of achievement in the 2nd Bundesliga against FC St. Pauli. East Westphalia won 2-0 (0-0) against Hamburg on Saturday evening (October 22nd, 2022).
The man of the evening in front of 22,626 spectators was substitute Janni-Luca Serra from Bielefeld with his brace (76th minute, 84th). In the table, Arminia moved up from last to 16th place. St. Pauli has not won in eleven games on foreign pitches and is in twelfth place with 14 points.
Pauli think first
The Hamburgers clearly had their hats on in the first half, significantly more possession of the ball and also the better opportunities. The first big chance was missed by Marcel Hartel (19th) after a nice through ball from Lukas Daschner. He failed from 15 meters on the strong parrying DSC goalkeeper Martin Fraisl.
And Pauli kept the pressure: after a cross from Leart Paqarada slipped Jackson Irvine (33.) just missed the ball in front of the goal, then put the ball next to the right post. Shaky at the back and harmless at the front, Bielefeld could be happy that it went 0-0 into the dressing room.
Bielefeld better in the game in the second half
In the second round, the East Westphalians got into the game better, made the game more open and were also convincing in terms of their commitment. What was still missing were moments of playful surprise and the killer instinct in front of goal. Attacker and captain Fabian Klos was mostly up in the air after his injury break and until he was substituted after an hour.
An individual mistake by Hamburg then put Bielefeld in front. After Hartel lost the ball, Masaya Okugawa finally served Serra, who came on for Klos and netted from 14 meters. The sack closed the “joker‘ when he headed in to make it 2-0.
DSC now in Fürth, St. Pauli against Darmstadt
