Double blow for ZV De Zaan in cup, but national championship big goal for water polo players

Both the men and women of ZV De Zaan won the water polo cup today. In the women’s game, Polar Bears easily won 13-7. It was more exciting with the men. There it was 9-9 after regular time, but the North Hollanders took the penalties better.

ZV De Zaan keeper Ted Huijsmans stopped two penalties and so the Zaankanters took the cup for the second time in a row.

“Penalties have nothing to do with how good you are”

“It’s a lottery and has nothing to do with how good you are as a goalkeeper. It’s a mental game. I was lucky that I knew the guys a bit who took the penalties”, Huijsmans said afterwards.

Of course trainer Andreas Miralis went into the water afterwards, but after he got out of the pool he was clear about the big goal. “We want to win three prizes this year. After the Supercup and the cup, we are going for the national championship. That is the big goal this year,” said Miralis.

The national championship is also the main goal for the women. “With six A-internationals we were a size too big for Polar Bears today. I think that we and GZC Donk have to fight for the national championship. You can make mistakes along the way, but I am responsible for that. We will go for it in any case 100% in favor”, said trainer Mick van den Bree.

ZV De Zaan was founded in 2012 after a merger of ZWV Nereus and ZZC Alliance. In its early existence, the merger club did not win a national championship, but the Zaankanters are now playing in the top. On Monday NH Sport will show an extensive report about the water polo players.
