Dormant assets amount to 622 million euros | Money

At the beginning of last year, the amount was still at 575 million euros. In the meantime, 3,979 people applied for a refund, amounting to a total of 10 million euros. Dormant assets are bank accounts, insurance contracts or safe deposit boxes that have not been used for a certain period of time – for accounts, for example five years – and where there has been no further contact between the holder or the entitled party (for example an heir) and the financial institution. This concerns, for example, accounts that grandparents had opened for their grandchildren, but of which they never informed them.

These resources are transferred to the government – in particular the Deposit and Consignment Office of the FPS Finance – pending their rightful owners to claim them. They have 30 years to do so, otherwise the assets will end up in the state treasury.
