In the opinion of baking master Liisa Westerberg, a cake shovel is often a useless product.

As the name suggests, the cake shovel is intended for cutting cake. However, times have changed, and pastries along with it.

– Before, the cakes were often cream cakes, i.e. really soft-based. They may very well be cut into pieces with cake shovels, says Westerberg.

Still, he doesn’t recommend it.

With a thick knife, you get much neater slices. Due to its width, it also works for lifting logs.

Changing the cake shovel to a thick knife could prevent a familiar situation at many parties: the last eater would be left with more than a scattered pile of fillings.

Party favors

You should cut a wide starting piece from the party cake.

– Then the cake can be put into motion, advises Westerberg.

– When the first person tries to cut a thin piece, and everyone picks it up with a cake shovel, it’s already destroyed.

For slicing cheese, mousse and sandwich cakes, the knife is an absolute must.

Hard base and salty fillings won’t cut without a blade. An ordinary cake shovel destroys the shape of such pastries.

Few think about it, Westerberg believes.

– A lot of cake shovels are sold because people think that you have to have a cake shovel, he laughs.

Did you have any cake left over? This is how you store the cake pieces in the fridge. Tuuli Syrjälä, Oona Grönqvist
