AND Donald Trump Person of the Year 2 Time. And it is for the second time: the first was in 2016, when he was elected president of the USA. And now, once again, the American magazine has chosen him for having won the elections again after what is defined as a “historic” political rebirth.
Who was on the list as the 2024 Person of the Year
The initial shortlist of favorites for the title of Person of the Year was initially 10 names: the outgoing American vice president was there Kamala Harris, Princess Kate Middleton, billionaire Elon Musk, Yulia Navalnaya (wife of Russian oppositionist Alexei Navalny). And again, Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu, former Fed President Jerome Powell, podcaster Joe Rogan. And then the Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum, the president-elect Donald Trump and the founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg.
Yesterday the list had been thinned out, and there were five names left in the running. And many they focused on Kate Middleton for her courage in the fight against cancer which hit her earlier this year. And the fact that she had already been in the running for Person of the Year in 2011 suggested that the choice would fall on her.
Donald Trump is ‘s Person of the Year Time
In the end, Time chose Donald Trump. And in thearticle in which he explains the reasonsthe magazine emphasizes that «for 97 years, the editors of Time they chose the Person of the Year: l‘individual who, for better or worse, has done the most to shape the world and the headlines in the last 12 months.’ And if on several occasions “this choice was difficult”, in 2024 “it was not”. Because since his first candidacy in 20215, it is explained, “perhaps no single individual has had a more important role than Trump in changing the course of politics and history”.
Why Time chose Trump
And if January 6, 2021, with the assault on the Capitol, seemed to be the date of the tycoon’s political end, “that moment marked his lowest point” but according to the Time “today we are witnesses of his apotheosis” and “all of us, from his most fanatical supporters to his fiercest critics, live in the Trump era”.
Donald Trump is in fact the first American president since Grover Cleveland (131 years ago, in 1893) to return to the White House after losing the elections immediately following his first presidency. And he was the first Republican president to win the popular vote.
And as his inauguration approaches, second Time Donald Trump is already the 2024 Person of the Year «for orchestrating a comeback of historic proportions, for leading a once-in-a-lifetime political realignmentfor reshaping the American presidency and changing America’s role in the world.”
For the second time on the cover of Time
Donald Trump, with his second nomination as Person of the Year (also assigned over time to decidedly controversial figures, such as Hitler in 1938 and Putin in 2007), becomes part of a very small circle of figures who have twice made the cover of Time. Among these, eight others should be mentioned former American presidents, (Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George Walker Bush and Barack Obama).
And then the Soviet dictator Joseph StalinGeneral George Marshall (creator of the Marshall Plan), British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Up to the Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, the Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev and the American soldiers. While the absolute record remains firmly in the hands of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who was the only one to be awarded the title of Person of the Year three times.
