Dominique Heintz gives reasons for the failed return

On Friday (8:30 p.m.) Union Berlin will host 1. FC Köln in the Bundesliga. Dominique Heintz will be the focus of attention, after all, the defender once played for the Rhinelanders. As the defensive all-rounder has now confirmed, he had the opportunity to move to the cathedral city again.

Instead of returning to 1. FC Köln, Dominique Heintz moved from SC Freiburg to Union Berlin in January. He signed a contract with the Irons until 2024, although a return to Cologne was definitely an option.

“Yes, that’s right, FC was also on me. I thought about Cologne and Union. There were a few talks – but one or two people in the club were not in favor of me coming back,” said the 28-year-old in the Interview with the “express“.

Especially after the difficult last few months at SC Freiburg, Heintz needed a club “that trusts me 100 percent”. “Ultimately, Union completely convinced me. The club really wanted me, that wasn’t the case in Cologne, so it was difficult for me. It didn’t work out with FC, even though everyone knows that I would like to come to Cologne again would be,” said the central defender.

Heintz needs responsibility and wants to be on the pitch every weekend. “In Freiburg this chance was no longer there,” he said, explaining the reasons for leaving the sports club.

Heintz is happy to see 1. FC Köln again

At Union Berlin they build on him again. “Union tried to get me in the summer and always stuck with it. I had good discussions with coach Urs Fischer and manager Oliver Ruhnert,” revealed Heintz.

With a lot of anticipation, the veteran is looking forward to the upcoming meeting with the Cologne team. “I’m happy to meet the guys I used to play with. It’s always nice to see the Cologne fans in the away block again. It’s definitely a special game for me.”

In the duel between Union and 1. FC Köln there are also important points to be awarded in the race for the European Cup places. The table seventh from the Rhineland is currently two points ahead of the Berliners.
