Doja Cat’s upcoming album is inspired by German 90s raves

Doja Cat has leaked the source of inspiration for her new and as yet unannounced album: German rave music of the 1990s. “I know it’s trending right now, but I loved the stuff as a kid,” the rapper said.

In an interview for CR Fashion Book, she said that she and her team have “a lot of ideas” for the fourth album, but the “challenge” is to “make the ideas consistent”. Doja hasn’t revealed which features will be heard on the new work, but did talk about the musical influences: “All I know is that there is a lot to do. I’m really into this German rave style of the 90s at the moment and it’s really fun,” says Doja.

“I loved this as a kid”

She continued, “I know it’s trending right now, but I loved it as a kid and now that I can express it (of course I couldn’t do my hair back then, wear a fluffy bra and wear a navel piercing), I make this my own. It’s kind of a nod to the album. rave culture, not house”. Rapper Drake had previously been influenced by electronic music on HONESTLY, NEVERMIND (2022), and Beyoncé also embraced the cult in RENAISSANCE (2022).

More rap than singing

While Doja’s hits like “Say So” and “Kiss Me More” mainly focus on traditional pop melodies, the upcoming tracks are said to consist “mostly of rap”, according to the rapper in an interview for “Elle”. She said: “I was rapping from the start and I wasn’t really good at singing at first – I’ve gotten a lot better. I use my voice as a tool to create these worlds, and it’s okay if people think I can’t rap.”

Doja produced “Vegas” for “Elvis” film

Previously, Doja Cat released her third studio album PLANET HER in 2021. After undergoing tonsil surgery earlier this year, the rapper revealed she won’t be touring with fellow singer The Weeknd, who recently had to cut short his LA tour after losing his voice. Meanwhile, she has other collaborations planned: she can be heard with Post Malone on his single “I Like You (A Happier Song)” and produced the “Vegas” soundtrack for the “Elvis” biopic.
