The fifty-year-old Saudi doctor arrested for the suspected attack in Magdeburg has been living as a political refugee in Germany since 2006. He was not known to the authorities as an Islamist. On the contrary: the man proudly described himself in 2019 as the “most aggressive Islam critic in history”.
