BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt has demanded that the federal government quickly introduce an obligation to register for people fleeing from Ukraine. “For a variety of reasons, it is imperative that we come to a registration requirement,” he said on Tuesday in Berlin before a meeting of the Union faction in the afternoon. Like Dobrindt, the parliamentary manager of the Union faction, Thorsten Frei (CDU), also sharply criticized Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) in this context.

Dobrindt said the registration had to be organized by the state and should not only be left to volunteers. It is also about the safety of the arriving women and children. In addition, the exchange of data with the Polish authorities had to be organised.

Dobrindt warned that if the war in Ukraine didn’t come to an end quickly, “we would have to deal with a flight movement worth millions.” Depending on the course of events, more men and ultimately parts of the army would also leave the country as refugees. “We have to prepare for such a horror scenario” – even if everything is done to avert it. Interior Minister Faeser has not yet addressed the challenge sufficiently. The procedure of the Federal Ministry of the Interior is “highly dangerous and in parts not sufficiently responsible”.

Frei also demanded more control and coordination of the refugee situation from Faeser. It is irresponsible to hope that countries, municipalities and aid organizations will somehow master the situation. You are facing enormous challenges, for example in health care or schooling for children. These questions must now be approached strategically. “The federal government and the Federal Ministry of the Interior do not play a good role there.”

Around 12,000 war refugees from the Ukraine continue to come to Germany every day. Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression, 159,772 people have entered Germany from Ukraine, according to the Federal Ministry of the Interior./bk/DP/ngu
