The tax return has been out for most people for a while, the first assessments hit the doormat. But if you get money back from the tax authorities, when will it actually be in your account?

In the income tax assessment, the tax authorities will let you know whether you will get money back or whether you still have to pay money. The first letters went to people who had filed tax returns before April 1. Anyone who filed a tax return before May 1, should get a refund ‘around July’, according to a press officer from the Tax and Customs Administration. “The payout will be in badges, so there is no telling what day that will be.”

People who have filed a report in box 3 need to be a little more patient. These declarations have been kept separate and a definitive answer will follow in August. The Tax and Customs Administration was dependent on the decision of the Supreme Court for this. Last Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that savers who paid too much tax on savings, but did not object in time, do not need to be compensated by the tax authorities.

9.5 million declarations

In the period up to 1 May, the Tax and Customs Administration received just under 9.5 million returns, 6.8 million from private individuals and 1.5 million from entrepreneurs. Anyone who received an invitation to report was obliged to do so before 1 May.

Even if you do not receive an invitation, in some cases it pays to file a report. This can still be done retroactively over the past five years. But how do you know if it can generate money if you file a tax return? “You can log in to the tax return program and go through the program. Then you see at the bottom of the line whether you get money back or not. As long as you don’t send the return, nothing will happen,” says a press officer from the Tax and Customs Administration.

You get money back if that amount exceeds 16 euros. Under 16 euros you will not get a refund.
