The share of scam calls on calls from abroad are declining. Still, there are tens and tens of thousands of them a day.
Telia warns about calling scams. Ville Järveläinen
A large part of the calls made from abroad to Finland are a scam. Telia says in its announcement that as many as 39 % of all plays from abroad are from cheaters.
However, there has been a significant decline, as a couple of years ago, scam calls accounted for up to 80 % of the calls from abroad.
Operators try to do their best to keep their wounds as many as possible. In the early part of the year, Telia alone prevented 32,000 scam calls per day, which means a total of just under three million blocked calls. More than two million of these came from abroad.
Growth has been specifically in scam calls made from foreign numbers.
– A good rule of thumb is that it is not advisable to call back abroad, Telia’s security expert at Telia Kristian Westerstråhle says in the bulletin.
Häläri refers to a call that is intentionally short that the recipient is not intended to be able to answer it. The purpose is to get a person to call back to that number. The approach is also called a call -by calling scam.
“Regardless…”
According to Westerstråhle, the efforts of operators make the scams get through Finnish phones and less and less often.
– However, you should be careful. No personal information, such as bank IDs, should ever be disclosed by telephone, even if the caller is presented as an authority.
Scammers play most actively on weekends and public holidays. They try to manipulate the victim to act as they wish, and typically it involves creating a sense of hurry or distress for the victim.
– Nonetheless, you dare to answer the phone. If something seems suspicious, you should rely on your own intuition, and you can stop the call quickly and decisively, Westerstråhle advises.
