Diving team Nemo – where the victim worked – is accused of providing a diving cylinder with an inappropriate tap, and is therefore charged with manslaughter.

Less than a week after the accident, the Labor Inspectorate concluded that the screw thread on the outside of the tap was of a different type than the screw thread on the inside of the bottle.

Because the two parts did not fit together properly, the tap came loose under pressure. The inspection warned other divers at the time to pay attention to this. Despite the quick conclusion of the inspection, the case only came before the court almost 3.5 years after the tragedy.

Blown away by explosion

About forty people witnessed the fatal accident in October 2022. The instructor was teaching that morning and was standing on the edge of the pool when the tank exploded. The explosion was enormous. “The bottle blew one way and he blew the other,” a swimming pool spokeswoman said at the time.

The man was resuscitated and taken to hospital, where he later died. No one else was injured in the accident. A bystander later became unwell in the clubhouse of the association. The club organized a meeting for members the day after the tragedy.
