Before the cancellation of ‘Alive’, Eddie Vedder recorded a partje uit ‘Oh oh ik heb zorgen’ from Louis Neefs, a detailed ‘Immigrant Song’ from Led Zeppelin and het door Agnetha canceled from ABBA’s ‘I’m still Alive’. The Killers – ‘Mr. Brightside’
What happens in Vegas, should stay in Vegas, luidt het spreekwoord in de gokstad was The Killers opgroeiden. In het geval van hun stadsgenoten Imagine Dragons we can daar in meegaan. Maar wat de group rond Brandon Flowers betreft, durven we gokken dat The Killers straks een – welja – moordconcert zullen spelen op Rock Werchter. The Killers write ‘Mr. Brightside’ al tijdens hun first repetition. De integral text wordt doorgaans mee keeld (“Coming out of my cage / And I’ve been doing just fine (…) It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss!”), maar de bizarre beeldspraak van het refrein moet u zeker memoriseren: “Jealousy, turning saints into the sea / Swimming through sick lullabies / Choking on your alibis”. Zing, clipping or sticking.
Beck – ‘Loser’
As a leading crooner, Beck can transfer to small clubs as head of the nation. So we now hear al een golf van tranen kapotslaan tegen het podium tijdens ‘Lost Cause’ of ‘Everybody’s Got to Learn Sometime’. Maar Beck is bowenal een duivelskunstenaar, met adeloos arsenal of aliases. When a cameleon pops up Beck zich dead gospel priest, funky bleekscheet, we get slacker and dreadful clown. Naturally also as a zelfverklaarde mislukkeling in ‘Loser’. Beginning with a negentig development of Beck Hansen and a haat-delivery delay with deze joekel van an MTV anthem. Maar sinds kort lijkt hij zich te spoiled with the nerdy nineties hit. Before the internet is in place, beet helped Europe to have another item on it. Maar vandaag kunt u dit lesje Spaans perfect leren opdreunen: “Soy un perdedor / I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me?” The nerds in the class like het bord afvegen wanneer ze also de ad libs can meebrullen: “Double barrel buckshot”maar ook “Get crazy with the cheeze whiz” in “Do you speak German, baby?”
Metallica – ‘Master of Puppets’
Het blijft bang afwachten of Metallica in Werchter zal aansmetting, na een coronabesmetting. Maar wanneer een stoffige westerndeun van Ennio Morricone dan toch over de vlakte zal waaien, zingt u even later luidkeels mee met een grandiose ‘Wherever I May Roam’, ‘One’ of de zuipsong ‘Whiskey in the Jar’. ‘Creeping Death’ was scanned in a different way from another world: “Die by my hand / I creep across the land / Killing first born man”. Hoewel de riffs van James Hetfield en Kirk Hammett altijd even as a strijdknots boven uw hoofd cirkelen, we loved toch dat ‘Master of Puppets’ de finale uppercut wordt. Al is het maar omdat de fans left en right little vergevingsgezind zullen blijken wanneer u zich haspelend a way baant doorheen “Obey your master / Your life burns faster / Obey your master / Master of puppets, pulling your strings / Twisting your mind, smashing your dreams / Blinded by me, you can’t see a thing / Just call my name, ’cause I’ I’ll hear you scream”. Een hele moon vol, sad but true.
Pixies – ‘Where Is My Mind?’
Toegegeven: we know het meest uit naar dat moment waarop Black Francis zijn longblaasjes door een nest wasps laat bestoken tijdens ‘Tame’ of ‘Crackity Jones’. Maar het overgrote deel van de Heilige Wei Wacht naturally op de tijdloze anthem ‘Where Is My Mind?’ Therein wordt het zomerzot met fluweelzachte melancholie bezongen. Het refran heeft niet veel meer om het lijf dan de titel, so dat valt also weer lekker mee.
Bazart – ‘Goud’
The way to the hell is cleared with good weather. The shortest way to a festival anthem was spoken with ‘Goud’, weet Bazart al jaren. Met a well-known oneliner tussen hemel en hel slaagde de Nederlandstalige elektropopgroep erin om een fenomeen te been. “Liever snel naar de hel dan traag naar de hemel?” Dankzij ‘Goud’ – we dared nu al van een Belpopclassic – blijft het trio moeiteloos overeind naast other mega-acts in de moerstaal as Doe Maar of Clouseau. Tip for the lefgozers: prober de falset van Simon Nuytten and Oliver Symons gerustt om Mathieu Terryn te ruggensteunen.
Sum 41 – ‘Fat Lip’
Bijzonder karaokeevriendelijke punk rock, zij het ook weer niet zo gladly gelikt dat hij Rechtstreeks via de gehoorgang langs other lichaamsholten naar buiten wil glijden.
