OpenAI did not provide any information about why or when exactly Sora will be discontinued. In recent weeks there has been talk in US media reports that the AI ​​pioneer is feeling the competition from rivals such as Anthropic and Google and therefore wants to concentrate more on the potentially lucrative business with companies.

No distractions

OpenAI manager Fidji Simo, who is responsible for apps, wrote on the online platform X last week that companies were going through phases of experimentation and focus. It is important not to allow yourself to be distracted.

In recent months, Sora has produced many artificial intelligence-generated videos that have spread across social networks. The app itself was also intended as a kind of social media platform.

Not a billion from Disney

With the end of Sora, a billion-dollar deal with Disney agreed in December will also become void, reported the industry newspaper “Hollywood Reporter”. At that time, Disney announced that it would invest a billion dollars in OpenAI and incorporate the company’s characters such as Mickey Mouse and Iron Man into the videos.

Walt Disney shares temporarily rose by a marginal 0.07 percent to $96.46 in NYSE trading.
