Disney in Argentina: the photographic exhibition of the creator of Mickey Mouse

“Walt Disney and the group: a trip through Latin America” exhibits a hundred photos, most of them unpublished, and projections of the journey undertaken in 1941 through nine countries, which led to an intense exchange with the Argentine artist Florencio Molina Campos. The exhibition will be held until April 30 in the Buenos Aires cultural space art x art, located in Lavalleja 1062.

100 years after the Disney studio, creator of a children’s imagination that has some of the highest-grossing animations in the history of cinema, the exhibition exhibits the invention of emblematic characters from the South American region. Ideas arose from that stay, such as the Brazilian parrot Ze Carioca and versions that go from a goofy gaucho drinking mate to the duck Donald playing with bolas.

The exhibition set up in the Lavalleja 1062 space also brings together reproductions of posters and original sketches from the films “Greetings Friends” (1942-1943) and “The Three Caballeros” (1944-1945), both products of this trip that walt disney undertook to hire local cartoonists. The animated productions are in the cinematheque of this exhibition.

Undoubtedly, part of the outstanding free tour is in the interactive spaces. From the fuselage of an airplane where the public can sit and see what Disney saw in Latin America more than 80 years ago, to drawing desks where anyone can trace some of the most famous characters in the history of animation, they are part of the proposal.

“That trip by the animation mogul was proverbial for several reasons, on the one hand it was the first to be made from the Disney studios with the aim of discovering new terrain, seeking inspiration in foreign cultures and unknown to creatives, a practice today absolutely instituted for their productions”, explained Ariana Fernandezdirector of the area of live experiences at Disney Latin America.

The journey invites you to meet the writers, graphic artists and musicians who accompanied walt disney (1901-1966) on that legendary journey through Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala and Mexico. On the other hand, Disney visited the “Los Estribos” ranch in the Buenos Aires town of Moreno, where Florencio Molina Campos lived for a while, the most popular plastic artist in Argentina, who caricatured the faces, poses and customs of the gaucho in an attempt to recreate his life. Molina Campos traveled a year later to the Disney studios in California, as animation consultant.

“These historical images have a unique chronology, never before exposed in this way, which can function as a travel log. They show a time but also a a relaxed Waltlittle represented in the popular imagination, getting to know new places, people and customs when he was already a director and producer, working and having fun at the same time, lying at ground level taking the photographs and filming himself that he needed for his research or walking around the Rio de Janeiro beaches, trying to dance cueca and eating barbecue with their hands”, describes Fernández.
