Yle’s former news anchor Marjo Rein58, tells about his dismissal and on Instagram that in his private Facebook update. Rein made his last newscast on Tuesday evening at 20:30.

Rein says that his attitude towards journalism has changed over the years.

– TV news has been my beloved home and a source of pride, but the last few years have changed news journalism in such a way that I no longer find my work as a producer and presenter to be meaningful, Rein explains in his Facebook post.

– I understand that the web and phone applications are an important part of news these days, but if the same fragmented material and selfie journalism is forced into TV news as well, I don’t think it’s appropriate. I don’t think everything that works online works on TV, he continues.

Rein feels that Yle’s investment in the TV side is weak, with the exception of foreign delivery.

– Broadcasting has not been of interest to front-line employees for years. There is no focus on visuals, the editors’ use of voice does not matter, and we authors do not receive feedback from anywhere but outside the house. The news studios were also renovated, but we, the creators and users of the studio, did not want to be consulted sufficiently in advance. And still no desirable and essential changes have been made.

– Journalism is indeed changing, but I feel embarrassed if TV news viewers are told to look on our website, for example, to see which Hogwarts room “familiar” from Harry Potter belongs to, or which donut you would be, he states.

Finally, Rein takes a stand on Yle’s change negotiations, which he describes as a difficult matter. Rein believes that better times await those employees who are allowed to stay at Yle.

– If my departure saves even one permanent employment, I will be happy, says the ex-news anchor.

– Despite my criticism, there are a lot of skilled, persistent and committed multi-talented people in news delivery. We will miss them, wonderful colleagues, he concludes his writing.

Rein also made a public Instagram update about his resignation, which has a more moderate tone.

– I have resigned from Yleisradio. I have been proud and privileged to have been able to do important and meaningful TV work as a presenter and producer all these years.

– In recent years, however, the situation has changed with both journalism and studio reform. I understand that journalism changes, but since it doesn’t always feel right for me when it comes to TV, it’s better to back off, Rein writes on Instagram.

Rein has worked at Yle for more than 30 years, first in sign language news, later in morning TV and in the last decade in the evening news.
