Discord, smoother graphics and more

A new update is available for the PlayStation 5, which is actually quite large. After a month-long beta test, Sony is rolling out several innovations for the game console. TECHBOOK reveals what these are.

The current update for the PlayStation 5 raises the software to version 7.0.0. The highlights include features such as support for a popular messenger and a new graphics functionality. But there are still numerous, albeit smaller innovations.

Update brings Discord to the PlayStation 5

Sony has already tested the connection to the Discord messenger service in advance. So far, however, this was only available to beta testers. With the update to version 7.0.0, the Japanese manufacturer is now rolling out the feature for all PlayStation 5 owners. Messenger Discord is popular in the gaming industry. Many players exchange information about him and use the integrated voice chat function. Players can now use the latter to chat across platforms with other Discord users during the game.

To link their Discord account to the PlayStation, users do the following:

  • Open the menu on the PlayStation 5 and go to the settings.
  • Then go to “Users and Accounts” and go to “Linked Services”.
  • Here you can now link the Discord account to the console. Simply scan the displayed QR code with your smartphone or use the browser login function.

But there is one limitation: despite the update for the PlayStation 5, the voice chat on Discord can only be started via the app on the smartphone or PC.

Over-the-air updates for PS5 controllers and smoother visuals

In addition to the Discord connection, the update also contains other innovations for the PlayStation 5. These include, for example, the ability to wirelessly update the Dualsense wireless controller from now on. If that doesn’t work right away, guess Sony on his blogfirst update the controller via USB cable in order to activate the wireless update option.

Another new feature is support for variable refresh rates (VRR) at 1440p resolution (2560 by 1440 pixels), often referred to as WQHD (Wide Quad High Definition). So far, VRR has only been available in Full HD and 4K resolutions. In order to be able to use the smoother display, however, players need a compatible monitor or television with an HDMI 2.1 connection.

Other new features of the PS5 update

Other new features of the PlayStation 5 update also include the following points:

  • Request screen sharing directly from a friend’s profile or share the screen with a friend.
  • Join a game directly in party chats. There is a group member icon on the voice chat map for this.
  • Better overview of friends who are currently playing. The PlayStation update will bring a display to the game hubs for players to see which of their friends own the game, who is currently online, and who is currently playing the game. You can also see what your friends are up to by selecting the tile.
  • Upload screenshots and clips directly from the PlayStation 5 to the app.
  • Games can now also be sorted and filtered when adding them to the game list.
  • Detailed preferences for multiplayer sessions by pre-determining who can join multiplayer sessions and invite other players. The setting for this can be found in the menu under “Saved data and game/app settings” and “Game preferences”. Here select the item “Online multiplayer sessions” and set the preferences.
  • Transferring save data from PS4 to PS5 becomes easier.
  • Easier data transfer from PS5 to PS5 via local WiFi network or LAN cable. The data can be transferred either during the initial setup of the PS5 console or later via the settings menu.
  • Improvement of the screen reader with detailed instructions for navigating the console.

This is how the update comes to the PlayStation 5

The update to version 7.0.0 is now available for download for the PlayStation 5. The console will load it automatically, but this may take a few minutes due to the 1.1 GB size. Users can also search for the new software manually in the settings under “System” and “System software”. Since Sony is making the update available worldwide, it can sometimes take a few days for it to arrive on every PlayStation 5.
