Both administrations will establish the modalities and the calendar for the completion of the process of movement of people and goods through the two land posts after two years of restrictions

Representatives of Spain and Morocco they will meet next Tuesday to complete the process of reopening the border posts in the Spanish autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, both in North Africa, which began last April 17 only for some travelers after more than two years closed.

In that meeting, both administrations will establish modalities and schedule completion of the process of movement of people and goods through the two land posts, reported this Sunday the Spanish Ministry of the Interior.

On April 17, the passage of people who met the requirements to move to the rest of the European Schengen area was opened: nationals of the European Union, Moroccans with a visa or residence permit in the EU, as well as those who had a passport in vigor. Later, on May 31, in a second phase, the borders were opened for legally authorized cross-border workers.

The reopening of the border crossings of Ceuta and Melilla took place after more than two years closed by pandemic and because of the diplomatic crisis between Spain and Moroccowhich had one of its moments of maximum tension with the illegal entry of thousands of illegal immigrants in May of last year.

Tuesday’s meeting is limited to the application of the commitments of the agreement between Spain and Morocco of April 7, in particular with regard to the progressive normalization of the movement of people and goods, through customs control systems and people, according to the Spanish ministry. The agreement, the result of the meeting between the King of Morocco, Mohamed VI, and the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, on April 7, was reflected in a joint statement signed by both countries

The text states that “the full normalization of the movement of people and goods will be restored in an orderly manner, including the appropriate customs control devices and people at land and sea level.”
