Diederik Jekel (38) becomes a father: ‘As a partner you can only bow deeply, deeply’ | show

Science journalist Diederik Jekel (38) is in seventh heaven: he is going to be a father. His girlfriend Eline is pregnant for the second time after a miscarriage last year. “What she and all other pregnant women go through during pregnancy, as a partner you can only bow deeply, deeply,” Jekel writes on Instagram.

Diederik Jekel, who can be seen regularly at the desk of RTL Boulevard and expert in the knowledge quiz Beat the Champions, the news is announced on Wednesday with a photo showing the ultrasound, a pair of baby shoes and a crocheted cuddly toy. He calls the pregnancy “great moving good news.” ‘When we heard 22 weeks ago that Eline is pregnant. For the second time. Our first pregnancy ended in miscarriage six months earlier. After such news, these kinds of posts can make you extra sad’.

He therefore likes to add a quote from his Eline. “I want to start with that because I know all too well how hard our happy news can hit someone else. So I would like to emphasize that if that is the case for you, I know how you feel, and have nothing but love and understanding for you.’

Jekel is therefore grateful and happy that he can now feel the baby move. Something he ‘can’t get enough of’. ‘I am so proud of Eline how well she already takes care of our little one. What she and all other pregnant women go through during pregnancy, as a partner you can only bow deeply, deeply. We can choose to work undisturbed sometimes, do not have to keep things secret, do not have stress all day long whether we are taking care of our child well enough, we have less mind load, we can eat / drink what we want, we do not have the hormonal fluctuations or physical consequences. In short; dear fellow men/partners, that household and everything else you can take over in the house: go for it! Help with this. We really have it disproportionately easier than our partners in every way. Biology is sometimes very unfair.’

Jekel concludes with the words that he ‘really looking forward to meeting the new Bommelaar’. ‘And inhabitant of our nice country and planet.’

Diederik and Eline Schmeets have been a couple since 2020. They found each other in the middle of corona time through online dating. Last October he proposed to her in an ingenious way. He made a video in which he said that only she can save their future together by playing out a homemade escape room. Eline climbed a church, had to search with metal detectors, solved a puzzle with UV paint and opened boxes by touching them in order. ‘Actually, she shouldn’t have had to do anything else than she already does every day. Make me happy, inspire her surroundings (and me), make our lives brighter, be caring for everyone and be her infinitely sweet self,” says the romantic in the scientist.
