AZ dominated large parts of the match against Tottenham Hotspur, the number thirteen of the Premier League. The team of trainer Maarten Martens was helped in the saddle by Lucas Bergvall’s own goal and then also kept the contole.
“We are not inferior to Tottenham,” Goes looks back on the victory. Afterwards, the central defender found that his team ‘actually’ was entitled to a greater victory. “If you look at the first half, you can take the 2-0.”
As a block
Thanks in part to very disciplined defending, AZ remained out of trouble. It kept Spurs far enough from its own goal and only had to watch out for the English attack drive in the final phase. “I think we look good as a block,” says Goes.
The difference with the previous confrontation with Tottenham Hotspur is great. At the end of October it lost 1-0 and AZ was the lesser party. This time it dictated the competition. “Today we went into the field with even more conviction. If you feel that, you can have an even more attacking playing style,” says Martens.
