Dick’s Sporting Goods acquires outdoor outfitter Moosejaw

The US retail group Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. is expanding its portfolio in the outdoor sector. On Wednesday evening, the company announced that it had reached an agreement with the Walmart group to acquire the Moosejaw chain. The purchase, which is expected to close in March, “reaffirms the company’s confidence in the long-term opportunities of the growing multi-billion dollar outdoor category,” Dick’s Sporting Goods said in a statement. Financial details of the proposed transaction were not released.

Founded in Michigan in 1992, the Moosejaw retailer has “a highly successful online business, a loyal customer base, strong relationships with leading outdoor brands and a passionate workforce,” according to a statement. The retail chain is also represented with its own branches in the states of Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan and Missouri.

Moosejaw CEO Eoin Comerford will remain in his post after the acquisition is complete. He will then report to Todd Spaletto, who, as senior vice president of Dick’s Sporting Goods, heads up outdoor outfitter Public Lands, which is already part of the group.
