Diana: what we know about the new HBO documentary

No.n 2022 the 25 years fall from 31 August 1997, the date on which he died Lady Diana in the Alma tunnel in Paris. Since then the Princess of Wales it has been told in all sorts of ways, on TV (we think The Crown) and at the cinema (it will soon arrive in theaters Spencer with Kristen Stewart and we have already seen – unfortunately – Lady Diana – the true story of Lady D with Naomi Watts).

All the faces of Lady Diana in cinema and on TV

To the Sundance Film Festival currently being streamed for the second timewas presented instead The Princess, yet another documentary (this time HBO) on the “sad princess”. But without frills and fictional, and therefore probably safe from controversy. British director Ed Perkins uses indeed vintage footagemany of them unpublished, to tell Diana and like his life from private it has become public.

What should we expect from The Princess?

It starts from engagement with Prince Charles in 1981. Ed Perkins uses amateur and professional films, alternating video interviews, audio recordings made by journalists of Diana and Carlo; there are those who judge it with prejudice, those who criticize it and those who praise it. And then there are fan voices who have always supported it.

We talk about the very young Diana when she was 19 is being courted by Carloof marriage, of the announcement of the pregnancy with the attached exaltation of the English people in pubs. And again of the birth of William and then of his brother Harry, of the rumors in the press on the alleged crisis of the couple and then of the announcement of the separation. And finally there is also the funeral.

Lady Diana, the media and the paparazzi

Diana was one of the most photographed women in the world. The documentary also tells this, the invasion by the paparazzi: suddenly a person’s private life becomes public domain. And there are also these moments in The Princess in which Lady D he comes literally attacked by photographerswhether in London or in the mountains in ski gear.

How much he suffered from this condition was tangible. The doc also delves into the relationship between the media and the Princess, he focuses on how the tabloids and TV have told it and how relationship between the English people and the royal family has changed thanks to the figure of Lady D.

Lady D’s story is about us

Several films and documentaries have been made on Lady Dmany speculatively to talk about the end of his marriageof how it affected his psyche, on his own fragility and about death.

Ed Perkins takes us back in time to understand the development of the relationship between the people and the monarchy. How did it evolve? And how much has the complicity of the people affected? The fact that she was attacked by the paparazzi is directly proportional to the demand for those photos by the citizensthose who loved and criticized her.
