Di Salvo struggles after U21 defeats

DFB coach Antonio Di Salvo drew a mixed conclusion after the German U21 national team lost to France (0:1) and England (1:3).

“On the whole we’re obviously disappointed because we could have done better,” said Di Salvo on Tuesday evening after the defeat in Sheffield. “We would have liked to have taken a point from England as well, that was also possible”.

Nine months before the European Championship, however, Di Salvo also sees positive aspects in the defending champion. “I think we did a good job at the back. Overall we defended well,” said the 43-year-old. Especially in the first half against England, his team also showed the required courage and self-confidence.

On the other hand, Di Salvo was less satisfied with the offensive. “We had actions where we simply had to be clearer, solve situations better, be clearer when in possession. We lost balls carelessly, that was the difference in both games to both teams,” he said.

The German U21s continue with two games in November, the opponents have not yet been determined. “We’re trying to play against two teams that will also be at the European Championship,” said Di Salvo.
