Excitement at the home World Cup
DHB women in the quarter-finals: Now the opponent has been determined

The DHB women marched through the World Cup with six wins in six games. On Tuesday it’s about the semi-finals. But against whom?
Germany’s opponent in the quarter-finals of the home World Cup has been determined. The team of national coach Markus Gaugisch meets Brazil. Kick-off is on Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. in the Dortmund Westfalenhalle.
The South Americans clearly lost to Olympic champions Norway on Sunday evening with 14:33 (7:18) and thus finished their main round group in second place behind the Scandinavians. Brazil had previously come through the tournament confidently and even beat Sweden, who finished fourth in the Olympics – one of the biggest surprises at this tournament. The game in the preliminary round ended 31:27 in favor of the South Americans.
The DHB selection had already completed their group on Saturday with their sixth win in their sixth game – 29:25 against Spain. Another success on Tuesday would mean the first semi-final appearance at a major tournament since 2008. The last World Cup medal dates back to 2007, when Germany won bronze in France. The medal games will be held in Rotterdam from Friday.
“This quarter-final in Dortmund’s Westfalenhalle will be the biggest home game for German women’s handball since the home World Cup in 1997,” said Mark Schober, CEO of the German Handball Association.
Last year, Germany and Brazil faced each other in two test matches – also as part of preparations for the Olympics. In July 2024, Brazil initially won 36:31 in Dortmund’s Westfalenhalle, and a few days later the German team won 27:20 in Stuttgart.
