DHB star Kai Häfner is leaving shortly before the German semi-finals

Kai Häfner is one of the most important players in the German handball team. However, the experienced left-hander will be missing in the semi-final against Denmark.

Germany’s handball national players will have to do without Kai Häfner on Friday evening. The backcourt player will miss the European Championship semi-final against Denmark for “private reasons” and has already left, the DHB announced. “We ask for your understanding for Kai and to refrain from speculation,” it continued.

Häfner is one of the key players in the young German team. With his experience and calm, the 34-year-old is a leader and has always been part of national coach Alfred Gíslason’s best line-up.

Two young stars are now even more important

It is the second European Championship game that Häfner has missed. He missed the game against North Macedonia in the preliminary round due to the birth of his child. He then returned to the team and was an integral part of the fight for the semi-finals.

In his place, the young stars Renārs Uščins and Nils Lichtlein become even more important. They are the remaining left-handers in the backcourt.
