The 22nd win in a row and what a convincing one: SC Magdeburg plays itself into a frenzy against SG Flensburg-Handewitt at times and is in the Final4. Bergische HC is waiting there in the semi-finals.
SC Magdeburg is in the final 4 of the DHB Cup. Coach Bennet Wiegert’s team beat SG Flensburg-Handewitt 35:29 (18:14) in the quarterfinals in front of 6,600 spectators. “The team is marching, doing its thing – that commands the greatest respect from me. I was worried that we wouldn’t be on point today, but with this outstanding atmosphere, we had the final push we needed,” said SCM coach Wiegert happily. In the semi-finals, Magdeburg will meet Bergischer HC. In the other game, TBV Lemgo and Füchse Berlin face each other.
Strong Magdeburgers pull away – Hernández defies Back problems
After the Magdeburgers missed out on reaching the Final 4 in Cologne last season, their big goal was to win in the absolute top game and quarter-finals against second-placed SG Flensburg-Handewitt. But there was trepidation at the start because keeper Sergey Hernández was struggling with back problems while warming up. But he gritted his teeth and would become a real factor midway through the first half. And it got off to a good start: Felix Claar and Omar Ingi Magnusson quickly scored five goals each, and the SCM moved ahead to 12:6 after 15 minutes. The guests then tried to defend more offensively and were then able to limit the deficit to four goals. But Magdeburg came back after a goal drought of six minutes and made it 18:12. But then two actions ensured this: Gisli Thorgeir Kristjansson made a bad pass and later he only hit the crossbar, so that Flensburg got back to 14:18 at the half-time whistle.
Sergey Hernandez kept the box clean in the first half, but then had to pass due to back problems.
SCM cannot be stopped even without Hernández
Are the guests coming again or is the SCM wandering in lonely circles? In any case, Magdeburg stayed in the fast lane, just didn’t let up and quickly increased the result to five goals again. Flensburg initially resisted the defeat, but then made more mistakes again. In addition, Matej Mandic, who replaced the injured Sergey Hernández, saved some difficult balls. And so the second in the table had their teeth pulled at the latest at 29:21 (45th). The best Magdeburg throwers were Omar Ingi Magnusson with eleven goals and Felix Claar, who contributed seven goals.
Felix Claar contributed seven goals to Magdeburg’s success.
