For the German footballers, the second leg of the Nations League final on Tuesday is about their first title since winning Olympic gold in 2016. In the Madrid Metropolitano cauldron, the DFB women have to defeat the Spanish world champions.

Elisa Senß’s eyes widen when we meet her for the interview on the sidelines of the Metropolitano Stadium. “The anticipation is great, you don’t play a final like this every day. We’re looking forward to the scenery and are ready,” said the Eintracht Frankfurt midfielders before the second leg of the final on Tuesday (6 p.m., live on Erste and at sportschau.de).

On Tuesday, the DFB women will face Spain in the Nations League final.

Record crowd expected at Atlético Madrid stadium

Around 70,000 people can fit into Atlético Madrid’s home stadium. The Spanish association is hoping for an almost sold-out stadium. It will definitely be a new record for the Spanish women’s national football team. The previous record is 32,657 fans – set during last year’s final victory in the Nations League against France in Seville.

Wück: “The stadium is sensational”

“The stadium is sensational, it’s an absolute experience for us to be able to play here,” emphasizes Christian Wück. The national coach is sure that his team can calm down the big crowd: “If we stay cool, believe in ourselves and stick to our plan, then we will be able to hurt the Spaniards.”

Like the 0-0 draw in the first leg in Kaiserlautern, when his team surprisingly dominated the world champions for 75 minutes, but forgot to score goals. Things should get better in Madrid. Wück wants to encourage the players in individual conversations and convey their belief in themselves. “At some point the knot will burst and the goals will fall,” said the national coach.

In Kaiserslautern, Germany had unexpectedly many chances against the world champions in the Nations League final. But everything is open for the second leg.

Spain without world footballer Bonmati

The chances are good because Spain has to do without Aitana Bonmati. The current world footballer broke her left fibula during training last Sunday and will be out for months. “This is a big blow for us,” admits captain Irene Paredes openly. Spain coach Sonia Bermudez speaks of a “bitter loss” and that she wants to dedicate the victory to Bonmati and the injured players.

National coach Wück wants to appear bold and courageous

But it’s not that far yet. After the first leg, as became abundantly clear in the press rounds, Spain has great respect for the German team, which appears confident in the run-up to the second leg of the final.

“Our game won’t change at all,” says Wück, who wants to be as bold, courageous and active with his team in Madrid as they were last in Kaiserslautern. His team has no new failures to complain about. According to the national coach, all players, including the slightly injured striker Nicole Anyomi, are fit.

Defending champions Spain have been unbeaten at home since December 2023. Spain suffered its last defeat (2:3) against Italy. An impressive series that the German team wants to break in the Nations League final. If the Wück team succeeds in the coup in Madrid, they would finally win a trophy again.

The title “would be perfect, so close to Christmas”

Germany’s last title win, the Olympic gold in Rio, was a good nine years ago. “I think that’s why we all play football,” says the national coach. “We want to make the team’s development tangible; it’s easiest with a title. We want the players to reward themselves. That would be perfect, just before Christmas.”

In the 0-0 draw at the start of the Nations League final, Klara Bühl was named “player of the game”. She is looking forward to the second leg on Tuesday with hope.

The 2029 Women’s European Football Championship will be awarded on Wednesday. Germany hopes to win the contract, but recently came away empty-handed.
