After the defeat against Slovakia, the German national team does not perform well against Northern Ireland. A player in particular is felt by the frustration of the fans.

William Laing reports from Cologne

A disappointing international trip has reached its negative highlight for Nick Woltemade on Saturday evening in Cologne. In the World Cup qualification game of the German national team against Northern Ireland, the again hapless striker was replaced after 61 minutes at 1-1 for Maximilian Beier. The fans’ reaction in the stadium: whistles for the former Stuttgart.

Striking: With goal scorer Serge Gnabry, who left the space for Nadiem Amiri only seconds later, the followers reacted much more graciously. There were hardly any whistles.

As a storm tip, Woltemade – apart from the template for the early goal of Gnabry – showed an inconspicuous performance. The 23-year-old had not ended with a goal, hung in the air. Woltemade was also unable to convince in the defeat against Slovakia (0: 2) on Thursday. He could not use the few options that offered him.

For Woltemade, which recently switched to Newcastle United for up to 90 million euros, the game against Northern Ireland only marked its fourth for the A national team. He has not yet been able to score a goal. The 1.98 -meter -tall attacker had given his debut in the Nations League in June, showing very promising approaches. He then became Vice-European champion with the German U21 team at the European Championship in Slovakia-and secured the golden shoe as the best scorer of the tournament.
