DFB: Flick certainly no longer 10 years national coach – relies on Musiala

Practices self-criticism because of lineup

National coach Hansi Flick does not want to look after the German national team for as long as his predecessor Joachim Löw. “I have no idea whether I’ll do this for another two, three or five years – but it won’t be ten anymore,” said the 57-year-old with a smile to the editorial network Germany. Löw had worked as national coach for more than 15 years and in 198 games, Flick took over this post a little over a year ago. His contract runs until the summer of 2024.

For the time after the national coaching job, he already has the first ideas. “I can well imagine that at some point I’ll accompany a coach as a mentor, even if that’s still a long way off, but I just enjoy it,” he said. “I notice that now when I talk to the coaches in the Bundesliga. It’s not about egos, it’s about football and interpersonal things, I like that.”

After his unsuccessful use of Joker in the sobering 0: 1 of the DFB team against Hungary, the hope of more inspiration and creativity in the German offensive in the duel against England on Monday (8.45 p.m. / RTL) weighs on Jamal Musiala’s shoulders. Musiala is set to play a bigger role at London’s Wembley Stadium this time. The national coach himself had indicated this immediately after the Hungary game. He only brought the Bayern youngster after 70 minutes because he had decided on a different formation up front.

Flick relies on Musiala – a special game for FC Bayern youngsters

Flick criticized himself: “Jamal has that certain something when a team is deep and defends compactly.” What the Hungarians did. “He would certainly have done us good in the first half. But we decided on eleven other players,” said Flick. Musiala had injured himself in training three days earlier. In a duel with Thomas Müller, he suffered a painful laceration on his leg, which is perhaps why the coach avoided the risk against Hungary. Against England, however, Musiala’s qualities are urgently needed to show a reaction and still develop a good World Cup feeling.

Especially since it is a special game for the teenager, who moved to England with his family at the age of seven and trained as a footballer there at Chelsea FC before moving to FC Bayern in 2019 and making a rapid start in Munich. As a junior, Musiala mostly played for the English youth teams before deciding to join the German senior team. In the 1-1 draw in the Nations League first leg against the English in June, Musiala played well at the home game in Munich. The fans voted him “Player of the Game”.

Flick and the DFB team need a whirlwind just before the World Cup, even if the current Bayern crisis has not stopped at Musiala. Nevertheless, before the Hungary game, the national coach said about the carefree teenager: “It’s just a pleasure to see Jamal play.” He raved about his “ease on the ball”. Musiala also knows where the goal is, even if he has only scored once in 16 international matches in the national shirt and was more conspicuous as a preparer. “Even at his young age, Jamal has a very high goal threat. He stays calm in the box under pressure and takes the shot in such a way that the goalkeeper can no longer get to the ball,” praised Flick. “He’s really good at that.”
