14th competitive game, 14th win: FC Bayern Munich’s impressive dominance continues in the DFB Cup. With a 4:1 (2:1) after a 0:1 deficit against the Bundesliga promoted team 1. FC Köln, who had been playing brilliantly for a long time, Super Bayern finally moved confidently into the round of 16. In addition to double goalscorer Harry Kane (38th and 64th minute), former Cologne keeper Jonas Urbig, representing the suspended Manuel, was the new match winner for coach Vincent Kompany’s team.
However, Luis Díaz (36th) had previously equalized Cologne’s lead from Ragnar Ache (31st) from an unpunished offside position. Michael Olise (72nd) completed a counterattack to score Bayern’s fourth goal. Munich’s second goal was outstanding: Kane, the captain of the English national team, made excellent use of a pass from Olise when he circled the ball past Zieler into the far corner from the turn.
“You felt that you had a chance. We got in well and caused chaos. It’s all the more bitter that we go into the break 1-2,” said Cologne goalkeeper and former world champion Ron-Robert Zieler: “Bayern developed dominance in the second half, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough at the back.”
Clearly inferior Schalke are thrown out of the DFB Cup in Darmstadt
FC Schalke 04 was eliminated in the second round. The leaders of the 2nd Bundesliga clearly lost their duel with league rivals SV Darmstadt 98 0:4 (0:2). Hiroki Akiyama (23rd minute), Matej Maglica (28th), Fraser Hornby (48th) and substitute Bartosz Bialek (60th) scored the goals for the Lilies. The Hessians will move into the round of 16 and remain unbeaten at home this season.
In front of 17,810 spectators in the sold-out stadium at the Böllenfalltor there was a completely different picture than Schalke’s 1-0 win in the league meeting last Friday. The Darmstadt team seemed unleashed in front of their own crowd and quickly took control on the pitch. After a heated start, there was a respectful calm in the arena for most of the first half. A few minutes after kick-off there was a medical emergency in the north stand. After half an hour, the supporters called again to support their teams.
SC Freiburg clears the Fortuna Düsseldorf hurdle
SC Freiburg has solved the cup task at second division club Fortuna Düsseldorf and extended the crisis with the Rhinelanders after four defeats in a row. The Breisgauer team, who had recently gone three times without a win away from home, won the second round game 3-1 (2-1) and, like last year, moved into the round of 16 of the competition.
Düsseldorf’s new coach Markus beginning, on the other hand, suffered a defeat in the third competitive game in a row and is under a lot of pressure in the home game against 1. FC Kaiserslautern next Sunday. The Freiburgers therefore remain in the running in the DFB Cup in addition to the Bundesliga and Europa League. In front of 36,112 spectators in the Düsseldorf Arena, Igor Matanovic (1st), Vincenzo Grifo (6th) and Derry Scherhant (90th + 3) scored the goals for the 2022 cup finalists. Anouar El Azzouzi (20th) scored for Fortuna in the first home cup game in six years.
Union Berlin needs extra time against Arminia Bielefeld
1. FC Union Berlin put a lot of effort into preventing another surprise from cup shock Arminia Bielefeld. The Eisernen prevailed against the sensational finalists of the previous season with 2:1 (1:1, 1:1) after extra time and trembled to take revenge for the 0:2 disaster in the second round exactly a year ago in East Westphalia.
Leopold Querfeld (11th minute) and Danilo Doekhi (106th) scored the goals for the hosts in the stadium at the Alte Försterei, which was sold out with 22,012 spectators, and thus made it into the round of 16. Monju Momulu (27th minute) equalized for Bielefeld. When Doekhi scored, the visitors were outnumbered as they were unable to make substitutions following Marvin Mehlem’s injury.
