While the Frankfurt team were kicked out of the cup despite their courageous performance, Dortmund’s journey continues – Eintracht captain Koch was particularly annoyed by one situation.

Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund did their best in the DFB Cup on Tuesday evening. In the end it went to penalties with BVB having the better end (4:2) – but a situation in extra time caused the Frankfurt team to be upset.

What had happened? Eintracht’s Jonathan Burkardt scored in the 115th minute. But the goal was disallowed by referee Sven Jablonski due to the offside position. After the cup exit, captain Robin Koch said in an interview with Sport 1: “Extremely bitter. We played a very good game for 120 minutes. We continued to push in extra time and wanted to score the goal. Then we scored the offside goal, which was very, very close and then lost on penalties. It’s extremely bitter.”

Koch also explained: “We perhaps deserved it a little more in extra time because we did a little more for the game. It’s a cup and it’s extremely bitter for us.”

Koch also spoke about the fact that several Eintracht players indicated during the game that Dortmund’s equalizer by Julian Brandt in the 48th minute came from a narrow offside position – by Maximilian Beier.

When asked whether he would like to have had VAR earlier in the cup, the captain said: “Sure, it would have been great for us if we had had video evidence today. It still remains that we played a good game.” The VAR is used in the DFB Cup from the round of 16 onwards.
