DFB contacts FC Bayern about Nagelsmann

Since the dismissal of Hansi Flick as national coach, the rumor mill about his possible successor at the German national soccer team has become increasingly heated. Julian Nagelsmann, the released former head coach of FC Bayern, is considered one of the top favorites for the post.

However, Nagelsmann’s personality may represent a high financial hurdle for the DFB. The 36-year-old has no longer worked in his role as head coach at FC Bayern since his release in March of this year, but he is still with the German record champions on a long-term basis until the summer Under contract in 2026.

Conversely, this means that if a club or association is specifically interested in the trainer, FC Bayern can demand a transfer fee worth millions for Nagelsmann. In the summer of 2021, the people of Munich themselves transferred the world record sum of around 20 million euros to RB Leipzig.

After “Sky” initially reported that FC Bayern would refrain from demanding a transfer fee from the DFB, “Bild” also confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that the German industry leader had made a corresponding fundamental decision.

As the newspaper report continued, the DFB is said to have now contacted FC Bayern to discuss Julian Nagelsmann’s personnel. Accordingly, Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke is said to have asked the Munich team directly whether they considered Nagelsmann to be qualified for the national coaching position.

DFB vice-president Watzke asked FC Bayern about the conditions

According to “Bild”, the conditions under which FC Bayern would let its former head coach out of the long-term contract were at least roughly inquired about by DFB deputy Watzke.

The Munich team should set two conditions for the association: On the one hand, the international transfer game agreed two years ago for Hansi Flick, who also moved from FC Bayern to the DFB as national coach in 2021, should finally be scheduled and played.

In addition, if Nagelsmann is released, the German Football Association should immediately take over all salary matters. With a rumored annual salary of up to seven million euros, that would roughly mean around 20 million euros that the DFB would have to pay for Bayern.

Whether Nagelsmann himself can even imagine a change from club to national coach is still an open question.
