Shock moment at the European Championship start against Poland: Germany’s captain Giulia Gwinn has to get off the ground in the first round.
Heart-tearing scenes in the German European Championship opening against Poland: DFB captain Giulia Gwinn had to be replaced in the first round. In the 26-year-old, tears flowed from the field. She was hugged by her teammates.
What happened? The Bayern player had just injured herself in a duel with Poland Ewa Pajor. In the scene in the German penalty area, she twisted her left knee. First, Gwinn was able to continue after a short break.
Shortly afterwards the full -back was back on the ground, punching her hands in front of her face, cried bitter tears. It didn’t go any further for her. Supported by supervisors, Gwinn had to get off the pitch.
Carlotta Wamser from Bayer Leverkusen came into the game for them. Janina Minge took over the captain’s armband.
It is not yet clear how severe the violation of Gwinn is actually. However, the pictures from St. Gallen do not suggest anything good.
The reason: Gwinn has already tore the cruciate ligament twice in her career. The second serious injury that she got into in DFB training in October 2022 cost the World Cup 2023. At that time the left knee was affected-just like now against Poland.
Meanwhile, ARD commentator Bernd Schmelzer said shortly after the restart during the transfer that Gwinn’s parents Florian and Gabi had not returned to their places in the stadium. The two had initially followed the game from the stands. After the injury of their daughter, they had apparently disappeared into the catacombs to help Giulia Gwinn.
