DFB: Bernd Leno is relaxed about chances and hopes for playing time

At Fulham since the summer

Goalkeeper Bernd Leno from FC Fulham says he enjoys life in England and sees his chances of further appearances in the German national team as relaxed. The 31-year-old told the TV station “sky“ About his almost five years in England: “They have helped me immensely as a sportsman, as a goalkeeper, as a person, as a personality. I’m very grateful for that.” In his opinion, the Premier League is by far the best league.

Leno, who was once active at VfB Stuttgart and Bayer Leverkusen, switched to Arsenal in 2018 and before the start of this season to neighboring Fulham, where his contract runs until at least 2025. With the newcomer, the goalkeeper is in the secured midfield before the end of this season. His former club Arsenal is still in second place and still has a good chance of winning the title, but Leno’s favorite for the championship is Manchester City again – the Skyblues are one point ahead and have played a game less.

Leno was last brought back to the DFB squad by national coach Hansi Flick for the March test matches against Peru and Belgium. The long-term injured Manuel Neuer was missing there. Leno played his last international match to date in early September 2021, when he was between the posts in the World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein (2-0) – there are a total of nine appearances for the national team. Until the European Championships at home in summer 2024, the DFB selection, which has already qualified as hosts, will only play friendlies.

“Of course you have to take the friendlies seriously and hope that you might get your playing time there,” said Leno. But he wants to let everything come his way: “I don’t stress myself out that much and I don’t say: ‘I have to play for my life now, otherwise my world will collapse.’ I know how fast football goes. I have experienced both positive and negative things myself. That’s why I’m very relaxed about it all.” The native Swabian thinks, however, that he presented himself in the Premier League. Leno has made 33 appearances this season, conceding 47 goals and keeping seven clean sheets.
