FC Volendam lost 3-0 to Go Ahead Eagles this afternoon in Deventer. Nevertheless, the eel farmers are assured of another year of the premier league, because competitor FC Emmen lost to Feyenoord. The most striking man in the Adelaarshorst was goalkeeper Filip Stankovic. He saved a penalty kick, but also made two huge blunders.
The ball had only just rolled over the beautiful turf in the sold-out Aderlaarshorst when FC Volendam already crawled through the eye of the needle. Referee Danny Makkelie gave a penalty to Go Ahead Eagles after two minutes for a foul by Josh Flint Filip Stankovic reversed Willum Willumsson’s effort. The pressure then remained on the goal of the Serbian goalkeeper and the team from Volendam only occasionally reached half of the Eagles without passing players Robert Mühren and Daryl van Mieghem.
From hero to schmuck
Towards the break Volendam seemed to get more and more grip on the game. Chances came for Carel Eiting and Xavier Mbuyamba. Yet things went wrong just before the tea break. Where Stankovic still fulfilled a heroic role with the stopped penalty, he now made a big bounce. The keeper wanted to cut Isac Lidberg out, but that failed. The striker of the Deventer club then simply pushed the ball in.

Painful
With the same eleven players, things didn’t go much better for Wim Jonk’s team after the break. After five minutes, Oliver Edvardsen headed in the 2-0 and Volendam had to hope that Feyenoord did its duty against relegation competitor FC Emmen. Midway through the second half, the afternoon became even more painful for Stankovic. He processed a simple long shot badly and the rebound was shot in by Dario Serra: 3-0.
After the final whistle, there was a lot of relief, because Feyenoord did their sporting duty against FC Emmen in Drenthe by winning 3-1. As a result, FC Volendam has a margin of five points with the relegation line and with one match to play, it is certain of another year of the premier league. Next week Volendam will play at home against Excelsior on the final day of the competition for the well-known beard of the emperor.
