Despite an hour advantage: VfB Oldenburg is defeated in the basement duel Halle

Status: 02/20/2023 8:54 p.m

Third division football club VfB Oldenburg lost the basement duel with the previous table bottom Hallescher FC 0: 1 (0: 0) and slipped to relegation place 17.

A penalty goal by Niklas Kreuzer (51st) led to the avoidable defeat of coach Dario Fossi’s team on Monday evening. Because the newcomer played after a yellow-red card against Aljaz Casar (30th) for 60 minutes. However, the attacks of the Lower Saxony were again too transparent this season, so that the Halle team could celebrate their first success since November 5th last year.

Sparsely occupied ranks at the “home game” in Hanover

Ironically, in the all-important duel with HFC, VfB was not allowed to play in the Marschweg Stadium, but had to switch to the arena of the second division team Hannover 96, about 170 kilometers away. The reason for this was that the mobile floodlights in their own home could endanger traffic on the adjacent Bundesautobahn 28.

The Lower Saxony had to do without the usual home game atmosphere in the 50,000-seat World Cup stadium on Maschsee. The ranks were too sparsely occupied for there to be any significant fan support.

Mielitz prevents early residue

Nevertheless, the promoted team tried to act in the style of a home team. VfB approached Halle very early, forcing them to win the ball and had the first chance (7′) from a free kick by Jakob Bookjans, which Manfred Starke narrowly missed at the far post. Little by little, the guests found their way into the game better. After a great combination, the HFC almost took the lead when Tom Zimmerschied appeared free in front of Sebastian Mielitz, but the keeper made a splendid save (13′).

After that, both teams exchanged blows in which Oldenburg was lucky that referee Martin Speckner (Schloßbach) did not give Halle a penalty after a duel between Robert Zietarski and Erich Berko (25th). The VfB professional hit the attacker on the calf and brought him down.

HFC professional Casar sees two yellow cards within 180 seconds

Shortly thereafter, Sören Reddemann missed the 1:0 for the team of new coach Sreto Ristic (28th) after a corner kick with a header. Until then, the 47-year-old could be satisfied with the performance of his team. But then Casar weakened the Hallens. 180 seconds after his first yellow card, the midfielder was cautioned for the second time, made the “traffic light card” (29th) and meant an enormous weakness for the guest, who now had to withdraw.

VfB immediately increased the pressure and shortly before the break Max Wegner was about to take the lead. Goalkeeper Felix Gebhardt just managed to deflect the captain’s shot over the crossbar (42′).

Kreuzer hits a penalty for Halle

A lot spoke for Oldenburg before the start of the second half. But things turned out differently because referee Speckner awarded Andor Bolyki a penalty this time after Zietarski had once again not put in a particularly skilful step in his own penalty area. Kreuzer started on his 30th birthday and safely converted to 1-0.

From then on, VfB went for a power play against Halle, who were now even deeper in their own half. The Lower Saxony felt like they had 90 percent possession of the ball, but far too rarely got depth into their game. A shot by substitute Orhan Ademi, which was blocked on the line (73′), was the best chance of equalization. The remaining Oldenburg attack efforts were hardly worth mentioning.
