AUDIO: Bitter evening for Wolfsburg: VfL women lose in Madrid (1 min)
As of: December 10, 2025 12:30 a.m
The VfL Wolfsburg footballers suffered a bitter setback in the Champions League. Despite good chances and a long majority, the North Germans lost 0-2 (0-1) at Real Madrid.
It was a symbol of a wasted evening. Shortly before the end, Stina Johannes sat in her penalty area with a bleeding nose. Real’s Iris Ashley hit her in the face with her studs – and saw the red card (90th + 3). The VfL goalkeeper was able to continue. A little later, however, it was over.
Maria Mendez after a corner (19th) and the lightning-fast Linda Caicedo after a counterattack (67th) ensured the “Wolfs” deserved defeat. After a yellow-red card for Maelle Lakrar shortly before the break, Wolfsburg played the entire second half with the advantage.
Real overtook VfL in the table. Wolfsburg is no longer one of the top four who will advance directly to the quarter-finals. Coach Stephan Lerch’s team has the last chance to advance again on December 17th in the home game against Chelsea. Otherwise the only hope is for the play-offs (up to twelfth place).
Wolfsburg starts strong
Things had looked so good at the beginning from Wolfsburg’s perspective. After a catastrophic mistake in the Madrid defense, Ella Peddemors shot from eight meters. But the Dutchwoman didn’t even get the ball on goal (2nd).
Just three minutes later, Camilla Küver headed the ball from a free kick. But the national player failed due to a strong save from goalkeeper Misa (5th).
Real takes the lead and weakens itself
Real survived the initial phase and then showed their own standard strength. Mendez headed a corner from Eva Navarro into the far corner to give the hosts the lead – 1-0 (19th). And from then on there was always danger when Navarro took a corner with a cut to the goal: Alba Redondo headed it onto the post (39′). Five minutes later the corner came directly to the far corner, but VfL keeper Stina Johannes had the ball in the follow-up.
But instead of increasing to 2-0, Madrid weakened itself. Lakrar saw yellow twice within six minutes and was already off work (45th + 1).
Caicedo too fast for Wolfsburg
Nevertheless, Wolfsburg only came close to equalizing once: Janina Minge had already had the equalizer in the last scene of the first half, but was disturbed. But even though VfL initially took control after the break, there were simply no more chances.
And Real countered the guests. In the 53rd minute, Johannes made a strong save against Caicedo, who had run away from Caitlin Dijkstra. Same picture almost fifteen minutes later. This time, however, the Colombian went around the keeper and also hit Dijkstra, who hit the post in her attempt to save the ball – 2-0 (67′).
The wake-up call? Not at all! The ten Real players were even closer to 3-0. Despite more than eleven minutes of injury time at the end, the VfL women remained goalless. Nothing more than the red card foul was recorded.
