As of: January 2, 2026 10:26 p.m
The Hamburg Towers have suffered their next defeat in the Basketball Bundesliga. The BBL’s second-to-last team sold dearly to the second Würzburg Baskets on Friday, but ultimately lost 88:91 (35:47).
Even 32 points from Towers top scorer Devon Daniels were not enough to cause a surprise for the Baskets and achieve their third win of the season. In contrast to the significant defeat in the EuroCup in Istanbul shortly before the turn of the year, Niklas Wimberg and Leonard Thorpe were able to play again in Würzburg, but were unable to set any decisive accents. Ex-Hamburg player Brae Ivey was the best thrower for Würzburg with 20 points.
Towers commit too many turnovers
In an intense duel, the Towers got into the game well, led early, but then committed far too many turnovers. There were 13 after the first two quarters, one of the main reasons why the hosts were ahead with twelve points at the break.
Daniels carries the towers
At the beginning of the third quarter, Hamburg fought its way back into the game with a 10-0 run within three minutes and took the lead 60:59 in the third period after a layup by Thorpe. The problem: Former Tower Ivey repeatedly ran hot from the three-point line against his former teammates when his team needed him.
After that it remained a duel at eye level. With 23 seconds left, it was Ivey of all people who scored the decisive lead for the Baskets with two free throws to make it 87:83. The Towers, on the other hand, missed too much from the free throw line to complete the surprise.
