114 goals, a meager 13 goals conceded, an 8-0 at the end of the season – and still missed promotion. The Borussia Dortmund women’s soccer team narrowly missed their goal of promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga despite crazy numbers. In 2026/27, the U21s of 1. FC Köln are starting one class higher. For BVB, however, a derby and new star power are on the agenda for the coming season.

After FC Schalke 04’s promotion to the Bundesliga, the men’s prestigious Ruhrpott duel between the Knappen and BVB will finally take place again in 2026/27. The Borussia women also have a duel with Royal Blue waiting for them in the coming season, but they would have been happy to miss it.

Despite an 8-0 win against Vorwärts Spoho Köln, BVB’s footballers missed out on promotion to league two on the last matchday of the Regionalliga West. The Black and Yellows’ 66 points were topped by 1. FC Köln’s U21s, who beat relegated Borussia Mönchengladbach II 2-0 in the final round.

BVB wants to “get into the first league as quickly as possible”

This not only means that the BVB women will face newly promoted FC Schalke 04 next season, but also that Alexandra Popp, a real German football legend, will lace up her football shoes in the regional league.

The 35-year-old, who, among other things, played 145 international matches, had already announced in March that she would be joining her favorite club, BVB.

“We know Borussia Dortmund’s plan: They want to get into the first division as quickly as possible,” Popp said about her ambitions at BVB. She wants to help “you find yourself in the first league as quickly as possible and establish yourself there.”

However, promotion to the Bundesliga will now only be possible for the 2028/29 season at the earliest. Popp will certainly do everything in his power to ensure that this happens.
