Derby match winner as a joker

Yussuf Poulsen had a very special moment for his first big moment in the HSV jersey. “First goal. In the north derby. In front of the north curve: nothing more is possible. I can end my career now,” joked the captain of Hamburger SV after his late winning goal in the 3:2 (0:1) win against eternal rivals Werder Bremen.

After twelve years at RB Leipzig, the 31-year-old attacker moved to HSV before this season. But two thigh injuries and an injury to the hip area have repeatedly set the Dane, who was hired as a leading figure and regular center forward, back in recent months. He also only came on as a substitute against Werder in the 82nd minute. Two minutes later he scored the decisive goal – with his first touch of the ball.

“For moments like today: That’s exactly why you play football,” said Poulsen. “The games in which it’s about a little more than three points. That are emotionally at the highest level. Where the stadium boils for 90 minutes. Where the fans accompany you to the stadium: that’s what you always hope to experience as a footballer.”

When it comes to dealing with their captain, HSV is now in a bit of a dilemma. Based on experience so far this season, relying on regular goals and appearances from the striker would be too risky. However, signing another attacker during the winter break would further reduce Poulsen’s prospects. With 86 international matches, two World Cups and two European Championships for Denmark, he is by far the most experienced player in the squad.

HSV coach Polzin emphasizes the value of the experienced Poulsen

“His value to the team is very great as a leader with his experience,” said Hamburg coach Merlin Polzin after the derby victory. “In many moments in the dressing room, in individual conversations and in group discussions, he contributed to why we are doing so well today with 15 points.” And what does he say about the winning goal against Werder? “Only football writes moments like this!”
